Ambergris tincture is not an ambergris perfume although it does have an ambergris fragrance; especially at higher dilution (6%). Several drops of tincture can be placed on a piece of cotton fabric and stored in a drawer. This process can be repeated over a few weeks to refresh and strengthen the ambergris fragrance. The fragrance will permeate the fabric (over a period of time) and provide an ambergris scented souvenir/keepsake.
20. I heard that ambergris has a strong fragrance. Is that true?
Many perfumes which claim to have a genuine “ambergris” fragrance may not in fact contain any ambergris at all. The higher quality ambergris generally used in has a subtle fragrance. When it is added to other fragrant materials; it will enhance the fragrance of these other materials but will not be overtly noticeable. It is also not a diffusive material. It does not circulate widely throughout a room knocking every one over with its boisterous power; as the drunken guest at a party. Rather; ambergris resembles the elusive mystery woman of the evening. You catch only a fleeting glimpse of her elegant perfection and notice her subtle perfume, only to be left wanting more. In a moment she is gone, elusive yet unforgettable.
